Before You Make Your Next Decision
I was sitting with my journal, thinking about how easy it is to lose your footing when everything around you is competing for your attention. We spend so much energy trying to find the "right" answer, but we rarely check if we're even in a clear headspace to make the call.
Sharing a few unscripted thoughts on coming back to yourself before you try to fix anything else.
There are moments when we recognize that we have wandered.
We may feel tired, overstimulated, confused, unsettled, or unable to determine what to do next. We may be trying to resolve something, make a decision, establish a goal, or understand what an experience means.
But before asking what we should do, there may be another question worth considering:
From what state am I trying to decide?
We can’t always prevent confusion, exhaustion, grief, stimulation, or uncertainty from arising. These are part of the human experience. Conscious participation doesn’t require us to remain permanently established in one ideal state.
It asks us to notice.
Where am I standing?
What is moving through me?
What has captured my attention?
Do I need to determine something from here… or do I first need to return?
Gathering your attention back doesn’t magically erase the noise, nor does it guarantee an immediate answer. What it does is give you space to meet whatever is here from a much steadier and clearer relationship with yourself.
In this video, I explore attention as something we can gently cultivate, how our inner state impacts our discernment, and why learning to come back to center might be one of the most important things we can practice today.
